Hindsight is perfect but these five lessons still work for every entrepreneur.

Are you thinking of making the leap to starting your own business? You are not alone as I see more and more making that decision every day. The decision to leap can be fraught with fear and uncertainty.

Well don’t despair, your Uncle Chrissy is here to help get your head on right. Oh what I wish I knew then what I know now. How many times have you muttered these words to yourself? I am right here with you. Here are five simple thoughts you should ponder before you start yourself:

  1. Don’t shackle yourself with an outdated definition of success. The compare game is a dead end. There is absolutely nothing you can gain from this. What do you want to get out of this? Starting a business takes a lot of time and energy. With that in mind, why would you want to measure yourself against someone else’s standard?
  2. Be curious. I can’t stop learning and I develop new skills every day. Right now I am building more relevant customer acquisition muscles. The topic really intrigues me. Nobody has all or even most of the answers to successful business building. The burden falls on you to develop your business. I am a huge proponent of building a network of smart people that you can draw upon. Curiosity is the gas that makes that car run.
  3. Measure everything. Like it or not we live in a business era where virtually everything can be measured. Big Data is a result of the measurement tools available to us as leaders of our business. I grew up in a era where the strongest or loudest opinion won in those critical business meetings. Not anymore (at least if you can drive the new culture). Today, insights are gleaned from the data and the data is collected across all aspects of the business.
